Got Globes?

O yes, he did.

I have to admit, I had a kick of anxiety the night before Ricky’s hosting Globes. I was too excited about what he’ll do. What kind of stabs he’ll write. To let someone this smart dig into Hollywood dynamics, it’s a rare pleasure for me. The power of words in play.

It was tough, he did take many stabs, but I wouldn't really call it - insults. I would rather say it's the people he made fun of. No one expects you to take digs at the most popular people on the planet. It’s different at the MTV Music or Movie Awards where the atmosphere is much more casual, and the people are known but don’t really have the legend status.

It's the names he took a stab at, that are making it controversial. Because no one would dare. People talk about them, they gossip about Tom and Robert and Angelina, but no one does it at their face, in front of the whole planet.

It's also a British kind of humor that doesn’t sit well with most Americans. Also, they don’t really understand it, either. It’s too quick, cheeky.

Most of us Europeans are dry, direct. But Brits and their humor are unbeatable. Disarming. Raw, direct, almost infantile but wrapped up in such superiorly intelligent sarcasm, there's nothing you can do about it.

Hating Ricky for it and calling him evil, it's missing the whole entire point. It's the same thing with Russell Brand when he hosted MTV Movie Awards in the US. He had brilliant jokes, but people were stunned. It was, as I remember, even worse than this, but it created much less of an angry buzz because Russell was "insulting" the Jonas Brothers, and not the likes of Tom Cruise. As I said above, the people you are poking fun at, make a difference.

For example, people were tripping over this specific one, a curtesy of Russell:

“As a representative of the global community, a visitor from abroad, could I ask of you, people of America, to please elect Barack Obama, on behalf of the world. Some people, I think they’re called racists, say America is not ready for a black president. But I know America to be a forward thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retarded cowboy fella be President for eight years. We were very impressed in England. We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because, in England, he wouldn’t be trusted with a pair of scissors.”

People were furious, well, Republicans mostly. But you have to admit, it's brilliantly funny, and on point.

As for Ricky, in the words of MICHAEL K from DLISTED:

“Ricky, if you make it out of Hollywood alive, please host EVERYTHING.”

Indeed.
